Obverse description Central field features the Portuguese royal arms — a crowned shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) — encircled by a wreath of laurel and oak branches. A circular Latin legend runs along the outer periphery, reading PORTUGALIE ET ALGARBIORUM REX, separated by a floral ornament at the top. The design reflects the Baroque engraving style characteristic of Portuguese colonial coinage of the early 18th century. The field shows the typical wear and roughness associated with a host coin subsequently countermarked for revaluation.
