| Obverse description | Countermark of Dom António, Prior of Crato, applied over an earlier X Reais host coin. The countermark displays a crowned Gothic cross with elaborate trefoil terminals, flanked by decorative floral or foliate elements, with the letters 'C' and 'M' (or partial legend) visible in the upper field. The countermark punch is boldly struck into the field of the host coin, partially obscuring the original design. The irregular flan edge and uneven surfaces are characteristic of hammered copper coinage of the period. |
