The 'AÇOR' countermark program was a fiscal response to the severe copper shortage and monetary chaos that followed the Iberian Union of 1580, when Philip II of Spain claimed the Portuguese throne. Existing copper coinage was restruck with authorization marks to revalidate and revalue pieces whose legal standing had become uncertain during the succession crisis. The X Reais host coins subjected to this process varied considerably in their original condition, meaning countermarked survivors range from crisp applications on worn flans to poorly struck punches on already-degraded blanks.
