Reverse description The reverse displays the original design of the host X Reais coin, showing the Portuguese royal shield of arms surmounted by a crown, with a partially legible encircling Latin legend. The arms feature the traditional arrangement of escutcheons and bordure of castles, typical of Portuguese coinage of the reigns of João III or Sebastião. The legend, though worn and partially obscured by the countermark strike, contains elements of the royal titulature. The flan is broad and irregular, consistent with hammered copper production of mid-sixteenth-century Portugal.
