The Natura series launched in 1994 as a deliberate counterpoint to the Krugerrand — fine gold rather than 22-karat, and wildlife subjects rather than the Springbok and Kruger portrait that had defined South African bullion coinage for decades. The Leopard year in the series follows the Big Five rotation that structured the program's early issues, each animal given a full calendar year across all four denominations.
The .9999 fineness was a direct commercial response to Canadian and Australian competition; the Krugerrand's alloy, chosen for durability, had become a marketing liability by the 1990s.
