Beschrijving keerzijde Two juvenile leopard cubs are depicted in close portrait, facing the viewer with finely rendered spotted pelage and expressive features, set against a background suggestive of rocky African terrain with a faint leopard silhouette visible above. The series name NATURA arcs boldly along the left side of the field in large stylized lettering. The denomination R10 appears in the lower right field, while the gold fineness and weight inscription is rendered along the lower margin. The engraver's initials CM are visible to the right of the cubs.

Aanvullende informatie

The Natura series launched in 1994 as a deliberate counterpoint to the Krugerrand — fine gold rather than 22-karat, and wildlife subjects rather than the Springbok and Kruger portrait that had defined South African bullion coinage for decades. The Leopard year in the series follows the Big Five rotation that structured the program's early issues, each animal given a full calendar year across all four denominations.

The .9999 fineness was a direct commercial response to Canadian and Australian competition; the Krugerrand's alloy, chosen for durability, had become a marketing liability by the 1990s.
