This issue falls within the early khedival period, struck when Egypt nominally remained an Ottoman vassal but was increasingly asserting administrative independence under Said Pasha's successor. The 10 Qirsh denomination in silver was a workhorse of Egyptian commerce during the cotton boom years, when American Civil War disruptions to global supply drove Egyptian exports — and currency demand — sharply upward.
