Syria's coinage in the early 1960s was produced against a backdrop of profound political instability — the United Arab Republic, the short-lived union with Egypt, collapsed in September 1961 following a military coup in Damascus. This issue emerged in the immediate aftermath, as Syria reasserted independent institutions including its central bank.
