| Beschrijving voorzijde | A chinze — the mythical Burmese guardian creature combining lion and dragon attributes — is depicted in right-facing profile, rampant, occupying the full field of the square flan. The creature is rendered in high relief with finely detailed musculature, decorative scrollwork on the haunches, and an elaborately beaded collar or mane encircling the neck. The open-mouthed head, facing right, displays prominent fangs and an ornate crown-like crest. The curling tail and powerful clawed forepaws are rendered with characteristic Burmese artistic style. No legends or inscriptions appear on this face. |

Burma's early post-independence coinage was issued under the Union of Burma, established after Britain granted independence in January 1948. The 1952 series marked the first substantive rethinking of the currency system, replacing the colonial-era anna denominations with the new kyat and pya structure. Production ran through 1965, just two years after General Ne Win's 1962 coup institutionalized military rule — after which the coinage types were progressively overhauled to shed the civilian government's iconographic choices.
