The copper-plated aluminium composition was introduced as a cost-cutting measure after the original bronze 10 Pruta proved too expensive to produce at scale for a young state managing chronic foreign currency shortages. KM#20a is the later, lighter variant — the parent type, KM#20, was struck in bronze from 1949 onward. By 1957, Israel had already begun planning the currency reform that would eventually replace the entire Pruta series with the Lira-based Agorot coinage in 1960.
