The National Bank of Egypt, founded in 1898 under British occupation as a private institution with note-issuing privileges, was not a central bank in the modern sense — that role eventually passed to the Central Bank of Egypt upon its establishment in 1961. Commemorative silver issues carrying the NBE name draw on that founding history rather than any current monetary authority.
The .720 silver fineness places this squarely in the tradition of mid-century circulation silver, though here applied to a commemorative. That alloy was the Egyptian standard for circulating silver coinage through much of the twentieth century.
