| Description de l’avers | The obverse is arranged in a traditional Scottish banking style, with the Bank of Scotland coat of arms at the top centre flanked by oval medallions bearing allegorical figures, the left column carrying further decorative medallion vignettes in a vertical arrangement. The promise-to-pay text is inscribed in copperplate script across the centre field, with the denomination '£10' repeated in the lower corners and the word 'TEN' appearing in dark cartouches at the upper left and upper right. A circular blue seal overprint is applied to the centre, and the date 'Edinburgh, 27 September 1963' is printed beneath the upper right cartouche. |

Bank of Scotland's pre-decimal £10 notes of this period were produced entirely in-house by George Waterston & Sons, the Edinburgh security printer that had a long relationship with Scottish banking — unusual at a time when most major note issuers were moving toward specialist firms like Bradbury Wilkinson or De La Rue. Waterston handled both printing and engraving, giving the series a consistency of finish that distinguishes it from contemporaries.
By 1963, the £10 was not a note of everyday commerce. Wages, rents, and routine transactions rarely required it, so surviving examples in circulated grades are genuinely less common than the higher face value might suggest — high-denomination notes that sat in safes or tills often survived better than those that moved.
