10 Pfennig - Werden

Werden, a small town on the Ruhr, issued emergency coinage — Notgeld — during the acute metal and currency shortages that followed Germany's defeat in 1918. Municipal authorities across Germany were forced to produce their own small-denomination pieces when the central government could not supply adequate coinage. Iron was the material of necessity; copper and nickel had been consumed by four years of war production.
