| Reverse description | The large numeral 10 dominates the central field, flanked at either side by a small six-pointed star at mid-height. The legend KRIEGSGELD curves along the upper periphery, while PFENNIG curves along the lower periphery, both contained between inner and outer beaded rims that encircle the entire design. The field is otherwise plain, lending prominence to the bold denomination numeral. |

Werden, a small town on the Ruhr, issued emergency coinage — Notgeld — during the acute metal and currency shortages that followed Germany's defeat in 1918. Municipal authorities across Germany were forced to produce their own small-denomination pieces when the central government could not supply adequate coinage. Iron was the material of necessity; copper and nickel had been consumed by four years of war production.
