Sankt Georgen im Schwarzwald issued this notgeld piece in 1918 as the German imperial supply chain collapsed under the pressures of the fourth year of war. Small denomination coins in copper and nickel had effectively disappeared from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply not replaced — forcing hundreds of municipalities to produce emergency coinage independently. Iron was the unsentimental solution: abundant, officially sanctioned as a substitute material, and deeply unpopular with the public who found it prone to rust in pocket or purse.
