Rudolstadt issued this notgeld piece in 1920 partly as a civic tribute to Charlotte von Lengefeld, who married Friedrich Schiller in the town in 1790 — a local historical claim the city council was not shy about leveraging during a period when emergency coinage gave municipalities unusual latitude for self-promotion. Iron was the practical choice: nickel and copper remained scarce in post-war Germany long after the Armistice, and municipal issuers across Thuringia defaulted to whatever base metal the foundries could supply.
