Oldisleben issued this zinc notgeld piece during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany from 1917 onward, when wartime metal requisitions stripped copper and nickel from civilian circulation entirely. Zinc was the municipality's only practical option — an unglamorous metal that corrodes readily, which explains why survivors in problem-free condition are harder to find than mintage figures alone would suggest.
