Neidenburg — now Nidzica in northeastern Poland — issued this notgeld piece in 1918 as the German imperial economy collapsed under the strain of four years of total war. Municipal iron coinage of this kind filled the void left by the hoarding and melting of copper and zinc coins, both metals having been systematically requisitioned for war production since 1916. Iron was itself a second-best substitute, prone to corrosion, which explains the attrition rate among surviving examples.
