| Obverse description | Within a solid raised border, the municipal coat of arms of Neidenburg is depicted centrally: a crowned armored figure standing facing, holding a sword in the right hand and a plant sprig in the left, flanked by two flowering branches rising from the base. The arms device is enclosed within an inner circle. The legend STADT NEIDENBURG arcs along the upper periphery in large Latin capitals, while three six-pointed stars are evenly spaced along the lower rim outside the inner circle. |

Neidenburg — now Nidzica in northeastern Poland — issued this notgeld piece in 1918 as the German imperial economy collapsed under the strain of four years of total war. Municipal iron coinage of this kind filled the void left by the hoarding and melting of copper and zinc coins, both metals having been systematically requisitioned for war production since 1916. Iron was itself a second-best substitute, prone to corrosion, which explains the attrition rate among surviving examples.
