Wagner & Englert was a leather goods manufacturer in Mettmann, and this iron notgeld token is a product of the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany during and immediately after World War I. Municipal and commercial issuers across the Rhineland and Westphalia filled the gap when official coinage disappeared from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply not produced in sufficient quantities by a wartime mint under pressure.
Iron was the material of necessity, not preference. By the time most factory tokens of this type circulated, the metal itself was worth more scrutiny than the denomination stamped on it.
