Grohmann & Frosch was a Leipzig-Plagwitz textile and manufacturing concern that issued notgeld during the acute small-change shortages of the First World War, when the German public began hoarding copper and nickel coins almost immediately after mobilization in 1914. Private industrial firms across Saxony filled the void with zinc and iron pieces redeemable only at their own premises — a practice the Reich tolerated out of necessity rather than policy.
