Hattingen's 1917 zinc Notgeld issue emerged from the acute metal shortages that forced hundreds of German municipalities to produce their own emergency coinage after the imperial government requisitioned copper and nickel for the war effort. Zinc was the reluctant fallback — cheap, workable, but prone to corrosion, which explains why surviving examples in clean, uncorroded condition are considerably harder to locate than the original mintages would suggest.
