Burghausen issued this iron notgeld piece in 1918 as the German war economy had stripped copper and zinc from municipal circulation entirely, leaving local authorities to improvise with whatever base metals remained available. The Salzach border town, historically prosperous from the salt trade that gave the river its name, was by this point producing emergency coinage simply to make change.
