Buer was an independent industrial city in the Westphalian coalfields — not yet absorbed into Gelsenkirchen, which wouldn't happen until the 1928 municipal mergers. This zinc notgeld piece was issued in 1919 when the postwar collapse of the German monetary system left municipalities scrambling to produce their own emergency coinage.
