Frankfurt an der Oder was one of hundreds of German municipalities that printed their own small-denomination emergency paper during the postwar Kleingeldnot — the acute shortage of small change that followed the First World War. By 1921 the Reichsbank had lost control of the fractional currency supply entirely, and local magistrates were legally permitted, if loosely supervised, to issue their own notgeld to keep retail commerce moving.
The designer credit "Jochem" is uncommon in the Brandenburg notgeld record and may refer to a local commercial artist rather than a professional printing house engraver.
