Obverse description Notgeld issued by the university city of Jena, with a multicolour Art Nouveau border of stylised geometric and foliate ornaments in gold, blue-grey, and black framing the entire note. A central red cartouche in the upper half carries the Gothic-script inscription 'Notgeld Universitätsstadt Jena', flanked by decorative roundels with concentric circle motifs. The denomination '10 Pf.' appears in large red numerals on a dark central panel beneath, with the date 'Jena, den 1. Mai 1921' in a blue-grey box below it, and flanking text panels on either side carrying the validity clause and manuscript signatures of the Gemeindevorstand and Gemeinderat.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in a rich palette of blue-grey, red-pink, black, and gold, with a sawtooth gold border running the full perimeter. A winged allegorical female figure in armour, bearing a lance and holding a heraldic shield quartered with a lion and a bunch of grapes, stands atop a recumbent dragon within an ornate cartouche; a stylised cityscape with Gothic towers rises above her head. Denomination numerals '10' appear in each of the four corners within bold circular frames, and the artist's signature 'Ritter' is inscribed in the lower left field.
