Opmerkingen

Berga an der Elster is a small Thuringian town, and like hundreds of similarly sized German municipalities it issued Kleingeldscheine during the acute coin shortage of 1920 — a problem rooted in wartime metal hoarding that the Weimar government was still years from resolving. These municipal fractional notes were technically illegal under imperial-era currency law but tolerated out of necessity.

Otto Henning A.G. in nearby Greiz handled a considerable volume of this regional Notgeld work, which accounts for the shared print characteristics across several Vogtland and Thuringian issues from the same period.
