| Obverse description | Green and white Notgeld on plain paper, framed by a double border enclosing a chain of oval lozenges forming an inner cartouche, with the denomination numeral '10' as a pale underprint in the central field. The heading 'Gutschein der Stadt Berga (E).' is printed in black letterpress above the frame, while bold Gothic typeface renders 'Gutschein / Zehn Pfennig' over the underprint, with the numeral '10' at each corner and 'Wert Zehn Pfennig.' running vertically along each lateral border. Below the denomination, the place and date of issue 'Berga (Elster) 22. Juni 1920.', the authority line 'Der Stadtgemeindevorstand.' with a manuscript facsimile signature, the validity legend 'Gültig bis 31. Dezember 1922.', and the printer's imprint 'Otto Henning A.G., Greiz.' complete the design. |

Berga an der Elster is a small Thuringian town, and like hundreds of similarly sized German municipalities it issued Kleingeldscheine during the acute coin shortage of 1920 — a problem rooted in wartime metal hoarding that the Weimar government was still years from resolving. These municipal fractional notes were technically illegal under imperial-era currency law but tolerated out of necessity.
Otto Henning A.G. in nearby Greiz handled a considerable volume of this regional Notgeld work, which accounts for the shared print characteristics across several Vogtland and Thuringian issues from the same period.
