Lindau's municipal administration issued this note in 1919 as part of the vast Kleingeldersatz wave that flooded Germany when metal coinage effectively vanished from circulation during and after the First World War. The printer, Dr. Karl Höhn, was a local Lindau firm — the note never left the immediate region in any practical sense, functioning as a purely municipal stop-gap redeemable only within the town's own commerce.
Lindau's island geography meant its local scrip economy was unusually self-contained. Höhn printed numerous Notgeld types for the Stadtmagistrat across this period, and minor typographic variations between runs are documented.
