By 1918, the town was issuing its own emergency currency like hundreds of other German municipalities, as the wartime metal shortage made small-denomination coinage effectively extinct from everyday commerce.

The watermark security feature is worth noting — many Kleingeldscheine of this period skipped such measures entirely, making Crimmitschau's choice a modest but deliberate gesture toward forgery prevention at a moment when civic trust in paper was already strained.
