Part of Mexico's long-running "Sitios y Monumentos del Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad" series, this issue commemorates the Temple of the Warriors at Chichén Itzá, the Yucatán site granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1988. The Casa de Moneda has produced silver kilos and sub-kilo coins in this format since the mid-1990s, with individual releases tied to specific monuments rather than issued as a cohesive annual set — a distinction that creates uneven mintage figures across the series.
The temple itself was excavated and partially reconstructed by the Carnegie Institution of Washington between 1925 and 1928, an early example of international archaeological collaboration on Mexican soil.
