The Pinzón brothers — Martín Alonso and Francisco Martín — captained the Pinta and the Niña respectively on Columbus's 1492 voyage, yet history largely absorbed them into Columbus's shadow. This coin was issued as part of Cuba's extensive commemorative program anticipating the 1992 quincentenary of that voyage, a series the Cuban mint produced aggressively throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, often in parallel issues for both the collector and bullion markets.
Martín Alonso Pinzón died within weeks of returning to Spain in 1493, reportedly from illness contracted on the voyage, never receiving the recognition Columbus's survivors would eventually contest in court.
