The Cuban Tody (*Todus multicolor*) is endemic to Cuba and among the most vividly colored birds in the Caribbean — the kind of subject Cuba's mint has returned to repeatedly across its fauna-themed silver series of the 1990s. KM#555 belongs to that broader run of commemorative wildlife issues produced for the collector export market, a revenue strategy the Cuban government leaned on heavily during the Special Period following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991, when hard currency was desperately scarce domestically.
