| 表面の説明 | Black intaglio on pink-tinted paper, with a classical allegorical female figure seated among flowers and accompanied by a cherub as the left vignette, enclosed within ornate guilloche borders. The bank title 'BANCO DE MARQUEZ' is set in bold letterpress at centre, with the place of issue 'Barranquilla' inscribed at upper centre, while an intaglio portrait of an elderly gentleman in a dark coat occupies the right panel. This is a specimen example, bearing red 'MUESTRA' overprints at lower left and right, with zeroed serial numbers '0000'. |

The Banco de Marquez was one of several private regional banks operating in Mexico during the Porfiriato, when the absence of unified banking legislation allowed a proliferation of local note-issuing institutions. The American Bank Note Company supplied engraved currency to a remarkable number of these Mexican banks through the 1880s and 1890s, often reusing or adapting plate elements across clients — a practical economy that collectors occasionally catch when comparing vignettes across different issuers.
The incomplete date format "188_" indicates the final digit was entered by hand at point of issue, consistent with ABNC practice for pre-printed sheets delivered in bulk. S583 is scarce in any grade; the Banco de Marquez had a short operational life and likely a small circulation.
