Abdülaziz inherited the throne in 1861 following the death of his brother Abdülmecid I, and Egypt's coinage shifted accordingly — though the khedival administration under Ismail Pasha retained increasing autonomy over the Cairo Mint's output throughout this period. The para denominations of this reign circulated in a monetary environment already being pressured by European financial interests and the debt obligations that would eventually force Egypt into receivership by 1876.
At 0.3 g, attrition in circulation was severe, and survivors with readable surfaces are far less common than catalog survival rates suggest.
