Obverse description The obverse features the Lion Capital of Ashoka, the national emblem of India, depicted in relief at the centre of the field, showing three lions passant guardant atop an abacus adorned with a central Dharma Chakra (wheel) flanked by a bull and a horse in low relief. The Devanagari legend 'भारत' appears to the left and the Latin legend 'INDIA' to the right, curving along the scalloped rim. Below the capital, the national motto 'सत्यमेव जयते' (Truth Alone Triumphs) is inscribed in Devanagari script. The entire design is rendered in a restrained, official style consistent with Indian Republic coinage.

Additional information

This denomination was effectively obsolete before the series even concluded. Inflation through the 1980s eroded the 10 paise's purchasing power to near nothing — by the early 1990s it could not buy a single matchstick in most Indian markets. The Reserve Bank of India formally demonetized all sub-25 paise coins in June 2011, but in practice these had vanished from active commerce long before that date.
