The traditional Chinese legend 中華民國 (Republic of China) arcs across the upper field from right to left, while the Republic of China year inscription appears in the left field, also reading vertically in traditional Chinese characters. A coin dated "70" is 1981; "99" is 2010. Collectors unfamiliar with the Minguo calendar system routinely misdescribe these dates.
