Obverse description Printed in black on a polychrome underprint using a combination of intaglio (chalcography) and lithographic techniques. The left vignette presents a seated female allegorical figure alongside the Imperial arms of Brazil, while the right vignette shows two goats; the central vignette carries a bust portrait of Emperor Dom Pedro II. The order number is printed in red at right, or on both sides in certain printings.

Reverse description Printed in green in intaglio (chalcography). The central design consists of the inscription IMPÉRIO DO BRASIL within a circle enclosing an armillary sphere, the whole surrounded by a ring bearing twenty stars representing the provinces of the Empire.
