Brazil's Imperial Treasury contracted the American Bank Note Company extensively through the 1870s and 1880s, a period when domestic printing infrastructure simply could not meet the quality demands of intaglio currency production. The 7th print designation within the A258 series reflects successive contract batches rather than design changes — the plates remained consistent while authorization quantities were adjusted to meet fiscal pressure in the empire's final decade.
Pedro II's government was running chronic deficits by the early 1880s, and the treasury issues of this period were partly instruments of that strain. Within six years of this print's circulation window, the empire itself was abolished.
