Mannschaftsgefangenenlager Salzwedel was one of the larger German prisoner-of-war camps of the First World War, holding primarily enlisted men — "Mannschaft" being the operative word, since officers were typically interned separately under different conditions and often issued distinct scrip. Camp-issue currency of this type was compulsory: incoming prisoners had their own money confiscated and replaced with Lagergeld redeemable only within the wire, preventing any financial connection to the outside world and, in theory, reducing escape incentives.
The watermarked paper is worth noting — most camp money of this period was printed on whatever stock was available, often without any security consideration. Its presence here suggests the Salzwedel administration drew on a more deliberate printing arrangement than most comparable issues.
