Turkmenistan's 2011 gold issues were produced during the presidency of Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who commissioned a wave of commemorative coinage tied to national monuments he personally oversaw constructing. The Monument of the Constitution in Ashgabat — a towering structure completed in 2011 — was built to mark the 20th anniversary of Turkmen independence and the adoption of the country's revised constitution, itself amended that same year to extend presidential term limits.
