The date in this coin's name is not decorative. On 27 May 1960, the Turkish Armed Forces ousted Prime Minister Adnan Menderes in the country's first military coup, deposing the Democrat Party government after a decade in power. Menderes was subsequently tried on Yassıada island and executed in September 1961. The commemorative was issued while the military's National Unity Committee still governed — effectively minting a coin to celebrate the coup before civilian rule had even been restored.
