Greece's post-junta coinage reform followed the collapse of the military dictatorship in 1974, and this aluminium series was part of the broader restandardization of the currency under the restored parliamentary republic. The lightweight aluminium-magnesium alloy was a practical choice — Greece's drachma denominations at the lower end had been effectively eroded by inflation, and a cheap-to-produce metal kept manufacturing costs below face value.
By the late 1970s, 10 lepta bought almost nothing in daily commerce. The type's short production window reflects how quickly even these modest coins became economically redundant.
