Romania's 2013 saints commemorative series presented an unusual ecclesiastical-political pairing: Constantine and Helen are venerated together in Eastern Orthodox tradition, with their feast day fixed at May 21st — a date that carries particular weight in Romanian public life given the country's majority Orthodox population. The "Solemn Year" designation tied this issue to a Romanian Patriarchate proclamation, not a civil calendar event.
This aluminium trial piece predates the final approved striking, making it a production artifact rather than a circulating or collector coin in the conventional sense. Trial strikes in aluminium were used by the Romanian Mint to assess die alignment and relief depth before committing to the specified final metal.
