Reverse description The reverse presents a finely engraved panoramic scene of Mount Fuji, Japan's iconic volcanic peak, depicted with snow-capped summit and surrounding landscape rendered in intricate relief. In the foreground, a traditional Japanese torii gate frames the composition, its reflection subtly suggested in still water below. Stylized clouds adorn the upper field. The commemorative legend '100 DE ANI DE RELATII DIPLOMATICE INTRE ROMANIA SI JAPONIA' arcs around the upper and lateral periphery in Latin script, with the founding year '1921' inscribed at the base of the design.

Additional information

Issued to mark the 100th anniversary of formal diplomatic ties between Romania and Japan, established in 1921. The relationship developed slowly through the interwar period, was severed during World War II when Romania aligned with the Axis while Japan's sphere of conflict remained distant enough to keep direct cooperation minimal, and was only fully normalized again in 1959 under very different political circumstances on both sides.

The National Bank of Romania has issued commemoratives under this format regularly since the early 2000s, with mintages typically in the low thousands.
