Latvia reestablished the Bank of Latvia and reintroduced the lats in 1993 after the collapse of the Soviet Union, making this 1995 issue one of the earliest commemorative programs from a newly reconstituted central bank. The Julia Maria was a three-masted topsail schooner built in 1862 that operated in Baltic trade routes and is now preserved as a museum ship in Riga — one of the few surviving wooden sailing vessels of her type in the region.
