Angola's 1999 coinage was issued during the final, grinding years of a civil war that had run almost continuously since independence in 1975. The Kwanza itself had been redenominated twice by this point — the readjusted Kwanza of 1995 replaced the earlier currency at 1,000:1, making this issue part of a monetary system still finding its footing amid active conflict. The UNITA-controlled interior saw virtually no formal banking, meaning circulation of these coins was geographically uneven from the day they were struck.
