Issued to mark the 90th anniversary of the Estonian Declaration of Independence on February 24, 1918, this coin appeared during a period when Estonian accession to the eurozone was still several years away — the country would not adopt the euro until 2011, making this one of the later commemorative issues in krooni-denominated silver. The Bank of Estonia had been re-established in 1990 following the Soviet collapse, and the krooni itself was reintroduced in 1992, pegged initially to the Deutsche Mark and later to the euro at a fixed rate.
