Joseph II introduced sweeping monetary reforms in the early 1780s as part of his broader rationalization of Habsburg administration, and the debased .500 fine silver content of this issue was a deliberate fiscal decision — a step down from earlier, finer standards. The coin was struck across multiple mint facilities simultaneously, including Vienna, Günzburg, and Karlsburg, producing subtle but catalogued differences in die workmanship between issues.
Joseph died in February 1790, largely considering his own reign a failure. The series ended with him.
