Joseph II's 10 Kreuzer was part of a sweeping monetary rationalization he imposed across Habsburg territories in the 1780s, driven by his broader Enlightenment-era administrative reforms that sought to standardize everything from coinage to church policy. The .500 fineness was a deliberate compromise — fine enough to maintain credibility, base enough to stretch silver reserves across an empire perpetually strained by military expenditure against the Ottomans and competing German states.
Joseph died in February 1790 having rescinded most of his own reforms under pressure from revolts in Belgium and Hungary. Coins struck in his final year carry the same dies as earlier issues, leaving no physical trace of the political collapse happening around them.
